I photographed these white pelicans while canoeing through the Ten Thousand Islands (backcountry wilderness for 4 days with no gps or cell phone).(Everglades National Park)Florida||||World Heritage Site-UNESCO-International Biosphere Reserve//.The Native Americans call the Everglades Pa-ha-okee;Grass Water//.50% of the Everglades have been developed,restoration of the Everglades began in the 1980's 1 of the most expensive & comprehensive repair attempts in history.
In historic times the Calusa & Tequesta were the predominant native american people of the region.Canoe trips 2 Cuba were common in precolonial times.The Seminole & Miccosukee tribes are the 2 predominant tribes in the Everglades 2day.The largest protected mangrove ecosystem in the western hemisphere-1.5 million acres-9 identified habitats-subtropical.Before I canoed the Everglades 1 of the books I read was Marjory Stoneham Douglass-The Everglades:River of Grass-1947.Great Book & Lady.The Everglades were a beautiful experience.
