Symplocarpus foetidus;Arum family;1-3 feet tall;blooms Feb.-April:Beautiful early spring Leaves (Spathe)cover yellow round spadix with small flowers.Contains calcium oxalate crystals only complete thorough drying removes calcium oxalate.Native Americans used the plant as a food & for medicinal purposes.Capable of thermogenesis generating temperatures up to 70�F to melt surrounding ice/snow to be pollinated early in the spring by insects.Bears also like to eat young leaves in the spring,a plant most animals avoid due to an intense burning sensation when eaten.The plants roots contract pulling the plant deeper into the earth,it is estimated some plants are hundreds of years old.
