Description
I took this photo behind my 100 year old cottage on Aquidneck Island-Newport County Rhode Island.
Symphocarpus foetidus also known as skunk cabbage or in the Algonquin language name Seganko.Found in swampy woods.
Flowers in wet woods in late winter the tempature in the flower spathe can reach 60°F above the air around it due to thermogenesis reaction of salicyllic acid and salicylates in the flower.
One of the first flowers in early spring New England...quite beautiful seeing them coming up through the snow on my hikes in the woods.
Considered toxic, extremely long living...the root can live for 100's of years.
Does have medicinal value.
